Set Up
Thinning the ball on pitch shots comes from swinging up at impact (scooping). Creating the angle and maintaining the angle are important to improve consistency with your pitch shots. Start with 60% of your weight on your front foot this will encourage you to hit down on the ball, position the ball in the middle of your stance. Now you’re set up to catch the ball with a solid descending strike.
Swing
Get the club up in the backswing by hinging your wrists. Keep your weight forward throughout the swing. Have the feeling of hitting the pitch shot with the back of your left hand, the club’s loft will do the work of getting the ball into the air.
Never let the club head get behind your body on a pitch shot. A common mistake is pulling the club quickly to the inside, which makes it hard to hit down on the ball. Swing the club head back and up, don’t let it sweep low and inside.
Hopefully this will improve your pitch shots around the green.
